As the Fertility Hub of Asia, Malaysia takes fertility services to a higher level with the provision of an array of cutting-edge treatment options, giving more hope to women who may wish to preserve their fertility.
In recent years, particularly upon the onslaught of COVID-19, fertility clinics have been seeing a huge hike in public interest in egg freezing procedures. Although not a new procedure, egg freezing is presently attracting a larger and younger population[1].
“Conventionally, women who turned to egg freezing were either of an advanced maternal age seeking to begin their fertility treatments or had serious medical conditions. Today, healthy, young women in their 20s are opting to do so in a bid to preserve their childbearing abilities so they can concentrate on building a stable environment for their future families,” shared Dato’ Dr. Colin Lee, Founder of Alpha IVF & Women’s Specialists.
Numerous countries are opening up to the idea of elective egg-freezing to prolong a woman’s fertility. In the Asian region, these include Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and, more recently, Singapore, which introduced its Assisted Reproductive Services Regulations under the Healthcare Services Act in early 2023. This new development will see women aged between 21 and 35 being allowed to opt for elective egg freezing for non-medical purposes regardless of their marital status[2]. This is welcoming news for young Singaporean adults who wish to focus on other aspects of their lives without having to worry about compromising their fertility in the process.
Dr. Lim Lei Jun, the Medical Director and Fertility Specialist at Sunfert International Fertility Centre, advocates providing women below the age of 35 with the option of preserving their fertility via egg freezing.
“Women are born with a finite number of eggs that decline in number and quality as they get older. As such, an optimal time to undergo elective egg freezing would be when you’re in your 20s or early 30s. This will enable your medical practitioners to retrieve healthier eggs more easily, which will contribute to higher success rates in pregnancy when you are ready to grow your family,” she said.
Elective egg freezing is a form of much-needed self-care that empowers women with a choice of when to start their family. As home to 10 out of only 37 fertility clinics outside of Australia and New Zealand that are certified by the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC), Malaysia Healthcare welcomes healthcare travellers from Singapore to take advantage of the world-class technologies and expertise that the country has available. This way, they can just head across the causeway to experience true care in Malaysia, the Fertility Hub of Asia, at an affordable rate.
