Malaysia has world-class expertise and technology providing a wide range of orthopaedic diagnostics and treatments, ensuring healthcare travellers holistic quality care.
Over the past 20 years, the field of orthopaedics has undergone significant global advancements, leading to shortened hospital stays and faster recovery. Surgical procedure improvement solutions, such as motion preservation techniques, minimally invasive surgeries, tissue-guided surgeries and cementless joint replacements are a few of the advancements that have evolved over time to promote better patient experience[1].
“Malaysia has a range of top-notch orthopaedic diagnostics and treatments at our fingertips, assuring healthcare travellers of quality care for their peace of mind. Bolstered by leading-edge capabilities and future-forward approaches brought on by the fourth industrial revolution, our private healthcare establishments are well-equipped to provide end-to-end orthopaedic care,” said Mohd Daud Mohd Arif, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC).
Advances in 3D printing technology have made a significant impact in the field of orthopaedics. According to Dr. Sureshan Sivananthan, Consultant Orthopaedic Arthritis & Sports Surgeon at ALTY Orthopaedics Hospital, 3D printing is primarily employed for tumour and bone loss cases.
“The use of 3D printing to create a scaffold of bone structures before surgery is not new, but it has recently gained popularity among many surgeons. A 3D printed scaffold can be used to fill up a defect in a patient who has experienced significant bone loss so that cells can grow into the scaffold and produce new bone,” he shared.
There has also been a shift from conventional orthopaedic treatments to cutting-edge techniques such as robotic-assisted surgery, open tilting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), EOS X-Ray System and more; all of which can be found across several orthopaedic establishments in Malaysia, making the country a choice destination for the treatment of orthopaedic conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, scoliosis, sports injuries and more.
For instance, robotic-assisted surgery, according to Dato’ Dr. Lee Keat Hwa, a Consultant Orthopaedic and Arthroplasty Surgeon at Island Hospital, combines robotics and artificial intelligence. “The robots are intelligent and assist with determining the best method with which to proceed based on accurate data input by the doctors. Thus, we as surgeons do not have to open a big wound when performing major surgeries on patients. Instead, we can make smaller, more precise incisions. As a result, robotic-assisted surgeries have a potential to be more successful and faster than conventional orthopaedic surgery,” she added.
Time, both in terms of the duration of the surgery and post-operative healing, is an important consideration when it comes to surgery.
“We encounter many patients, especially healthcare travellers, who would prefer to keep their hospital stay to a minimum. As a result of the advancement of medical innovation and the evolution of the field of orthopaedics, I perform many fast-track knee replacements, allowing patients to walk almost immediately after surgery. Patients are typically operated on in the morning and can walk the same day,” said Dato’ Dr. Siva Kumar Ariaretnam, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Subang Jaya Medical Centre.
Malaysia Healthcare aspires to provide all healthcare travellers with a seamless healthcare experience from the moment they make their inquiry. “Today, with the full support of the Malaysian High Commissions and healthcare travel agents, we are working on offering a fast-track visa application for healthcare travellers from Bangladesh that will take just three processing days. This fast-track e-visa facilitation programme will make it even easier for healthcare travellers from Bangladesh to head over to Malaysia to obtain quality and affordable healthcare to complement the medical offerings in Bangladesh,” explained Mohd Daud.
