A Hundred Unsung Heroes: Abdul Halim bin Aldin – Assistant Security Officer, Sunway Medical Center

“Many customers expected different treatment because this is a private hospital and took their frustrations out on us”

When it came to work, my routine flowed smoothly – just follow the roster. However, all that ended when we were in the pandemic. As frontliners, we had to wear full PPE and at the beginning, it was uncomfortable. On top of that we had to face a battalion of patients and visitors and ensure they followed all SOPs.

Many customers expected different treatment because this is a private hospital and took their frustrations out on us. It was disheartening at times because they did not seem to understand that we were just doing our jobs – more than that, we were trying our hardest to help prevent the spread of the virus. Fortunately, many of them were able to understand when we explained to them why we needed to follow the processes.

On top of work pressures, I was also worried about my father who lives in Cameron Highlands. He is a heart patient who needs to get medication every three months from a hospital in KL, but due to closed state borders, it was difficult for him to obtain them. So, we hatched a plan where I would get the medication and meet him at the border to pass it to him. Naturally, we obtained all necessary documents to even travel to the border. While I was able to go to Cameron Highlands, I also knew that I was needed to help at the hospital.

The pandemic may be a scary thing, but it has also taught us to be vigilant. It is up to us to throw away the negatives and focus on the positives. At the end of the day, we need to be kind and help one another through this because everyone is fighting a same battle.
