Background and Introduction

Medical Travel Media Awards (MTMA) 2021 is an event that recognises and rewards excellence in journalism for both local and international media practitioners as well as influencers who have contributed to the promotion of medical travel in Malaysia.

This year, there are four highly competitive main categories – Best Print, Online, Broadcast Feature, and Influencer category, don’t miss your chance to participate now and stand a chance to win cash prizes worth up to RM100,000!

Awards Methodology and Judging Process

There are different methodologies Malaysia Healthcare follows to select the winners for each category.

The requirements for each category are below:


A feature or series of related features delivered on print, online, broadcasting and social media platform that:

  • Examines medical travel industry in Malaysian context
  • Provides useful background material for readers to understand relevance
  • Demonstrates journalistic flair – a style that is engaging, thought-provoking and accessible to its audience
  • Reach-shareability in terms on digital/social presence

Presented to the journalist who has provided the most timely, accurate and original news reporting on Malaysia’s medical travel industry (across print, online and broadcast).

Awarded to the editorial team that has provided the most insightful analysis of all aspects of medical travel (Malaysia and internationally).

Judging Criteria

The awards will be evaluated based on the following five key areas:

  • Quality of Research (30 points)
  • Quality of Technique / Presentations (20 points)
  • Creativity (20 points)
  • Content/ Headlines (20 points)
  • Digital/ Social Presence/ Shareability (10 points)

Word and Social Posting Limit

  • Print / Online Media: A minimum of 800 words in length
  • Broadcast Media: A minimum of 60-seconds in length
  • Influencers / Key Opinion Leaders / Freelancers:
    • Eligible platforms: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube TikTok, Blogs
      • A minimum of 1 social media content in the form(s):
      • 1 video with the minimum video length of 15 seconds; OR
      • 1 static social media post with single or multiple photos; OR
      • 1 blog article with a minimum of 500 words in length OR
      • Commentary/Letter/Opinion Piece: 1 article with the minimum of 500 words in length


  • Professional journalists and writers, and media agencies who are permanently and/or contractually, employed by print, electronic and online media organisations globally. Full time journalists working for wires agency are also eligible to participate by virtue of their role as news providers to media organisations.
  • Freelancers and stringers/part-timers are welcomed to participate with the prior approval from the editor/news agency where the report was published or broadcasted.
  • Freelancers, stringers/part-timers, and media practitioners in institutions contracted by MHTC and/or those affiliated with the MTMA Secretariat are NOT ELIGIBLE to participate.
  • Influencers are welcomed to submit content that is not commissioned by MHTC and/or those affiliated with the MTMA Secretariat
  • All submissions must be in English. Entries in other languages must be submitted together with an official translation in English.
  • All submissions must be made strictly on the MTMA Entry Form and contain full contact details of the entrant, including, passport-sized photograph, official work address, telephone, and e-mail. Entries must reach the secretariat by 5 p.m. on 8 October 2021 (MYT). Any late submission will not be counted.

Terms and Conditions

  • An official entry form must accompany all submissions.
  • All entries must include the reach of their article on social media. Please provide a file with the breakdown of post engagement on each social media platform.
  • An original clipping or scanned copy in PDF format of the print/online report must be included in the submission. For any entry that is submitting videos, please include a transcript of the recording and shared via a Google Drive link, a WeTransfer link or a YouTube link.
  • Influencers are required to share a list of metrics with MTMA for evaluation based on the posting platform. Please find the detailed metrics the ‘Best Medical Travel Influencer (Malaysia/International) box under the Award Categories.
  • Prizes will be awarded to category winners.
  • Entrants agree to the reproduction of their submission for the purpose of judging and promotion of the awards. The judges have the right not to make an award in any category and their decision is final.
  • The organiser holds absolute discretion not to award certain categories to maintain the prestige and/or integrity of the Awards.
