CEO's Message

Assalamualaikum and warm greetings from Malaysia Healthcare!

Within a blink of an eye, we are already in the second quarter of 2020. Last year was indeed very fruitful, filled with sound successes and golden opportunities that took Malaysia Healthcare to even greater heights. 2019 ended big for us, as we celebrated our joyous victory at the annual International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ) Medical Travel Awards with yet another ‘Health and Tourism: Cluster of the Year’ Award and a Highly Commendable Mention as Destination of the Year.

We commenced 2020 with a line-up of exciting initiatives that aimed to showcase Malaysia as the World’s Healthcare Marvel. Our enthusiasm, unfortunately, is dampened as we are now faced with the COVID-19 pandemic that has greatly affected not only the healthcare travel industry, but the global community as a whole. With the rest of 2020 set to remain uncertain as the pandemic continues, the Government has put proper protocols and procedures in place to ensure public health and national safety are given top priority.

We applaud the Malaysian Government, in particular, the Ministry of Health, for being vigilant with pre-emptive measures taken in managing the COVID-19 situation since the onset of the outbreak. With the world struggling to contain the spread of COVID-19, it was indeed a proud moment when the nation was commended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for our strong and proven capabilities in managing the spread of this virus. This also led us to being ranked 18th worldwide, and third in Asia, for pandemic preparedness in the Global Health Security Index, as produced by the John Hopkins Centre for Health Security. We have also been identified by WHO as one of the first countries to test out a potential remedy for the COVID-19 virus. With heartfelt gratitude, we thank our front liners for their relentless dedication and sacrifices in combatting the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

On that note too, I would also like to warmly congratulate YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin on his appointment as the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia and we look forward to being under YAB’s leadership to steer Malaysia to new heights. I would like to also offer my sincere congratulations to YB Senator Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, YB Datuk Sri Dr. Adham Baba and YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri on their recent appointments as our new Minister of Finance, Minister of Health and Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, respectively. Malaysia Healthcare looks forward to working with them and exploring new directions, milestones and achievements to accomplish within the healthcare travel industry.

In light of the outbreak, and with a heavy heart, we have decided to defer the Malaysia Year of Healthcare Travel campaign. With an optimistic outlook, we hope to resume the campaign in 2021. We are nevertheless still doing our best to ensure that our efforts for 2020 are not wasted as we continue to promote Malaysia as the World’s Healthcare Marvel. During this period, we are focused on being present and relevant in our markets by working closely with all our partners to ensure we continue delivering in the most effective and safest way possible. I look forward to resuming our services in full to our healthcare travellers once the outbreak is over.

Honoured and inspired by the success of our inaugural Medical Travel Media Awards in 2019 (MTMA2019), this year’s Medical Travel Media Awards 2020 (MTMA2020) ups the game with the introduction of more award categories and anticipates increased entries from all over the world. The deadline for submissions has been extended to 15 August 2020, and I humbly invite all journalists to submit their work, whether in print, online, or broadcast format, to stand a chance to win up to RM80,000 in cash prizes. You may visit MTMA2020’s official website for more information.

The fifth edition of Malaysia’s medical travel market intelligence conference, insigHT2020, has also been postponed to a later date. The conference will now be held from 25-26 November 2020 in Kuala Lumpur. Do look out for more information on this year’s theme at the insigHT2020 official website and how the conference can benefit you with its in-depth insights on the ever-changing healthcare travel landscape.

We remain optimistic in delivering our best throughout 2020 leading towards the Malaysia Year of Healthcare Travel, hopefully, in 2021. As envisioned by the campaign, we are determined to establish Malaysia as the World’s Healthcare Marvel and are focusing our efforts and strategies towards a more impactful campaign. Let’s continue to work together to ensure that Malaysia Healthcare remains as top of mind.

Till next time, let’s all do our part in battling COVID-19 by diligently by practising social distancing and by staying at home to flatten the curve. Be safe, and let’s pray that this pandemic will end soon.
