A Hundred Unsung Heroes: Ruziyana Mohd Rozali – Assistant Nurse, Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur

“As a frontliner, it is worrying when people are diagnosed with COVID-19, especially our senior citizens. But we pray and hope for the best for our nation.”

During the pandemic, I found myself in a new role and I was stationed at the Patient Under Investigation (PUI) ward whereby our main task was to take care of patients who were suspected of having COVID-19. The situation was quite different compared to when I was working prior to the pandemic. Back then, most of the cases in my ward were for surgical cases. During the pandemic, it was a new experience for us and it was hard for us at the beginning to adapt to the situation.

On the first day I was stationed at the PUI ward, I had already witnessed patients being diagnosed with COVID-19. Things were quite hectic then in terms of dealing with the situation as it was very new to us but thanks to the co-operation of our fellow team members and the hospital management, we managed to handle it.

As for my family members, they are quite worried for me but after explaining my job and assuring them of my safety, they are much more supportive now. But they still call me every day to check on me as my family isn’t based in Kuala Lumpur.

I think the pandemic has shown how good our healthcare system is and this will also help to reinstill patients’ trust to come to our country. As a frontliner, it is worrying when people are diagnosed with COVID-19, especially our senior citizens. But we pray and hope for the best for our nation.
