A Hundred Unsung Heroes: Puspalladah Suppiah – Housekeeping Manager, Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur

“We had to disinfect the high-touch areas every two hours while dressed in PPE, and this was a tremendous task.”

I’ve been a part of the hospitality and housekeeping industry for the past 23 years. Being in this line of work, our chief responsibilities lie in ensuring that everything is well maintained, hygienic and clean – assuring patients they are safe and always looked after.

While routine disinfections are part of any hospital regulatory procedures, during COVID-19 we had to double up our efforts to make sure that everything is always well maintained and kept safe.

We had to disinfect the high-touch areas such as door handles, lift buttons, ATM machines and more every two hours while dressed in PPE, and this was a tremendous task for the staff assigned it. People were concerned, but that is where we come in and do our best to assure them that they are safe and protected.

While work may get really tough sometimes, my family has been a pillar of strength and support. They see the bigger picture and understand that I have to be where I am. Unlike many other jobs out there, mine cannot be done remotely. We have to be here for the safety of patients, colleagues and people in the hospital.

Today I feel very proud when I hear of how Malaysia is being recognised for its’ COVID-19 management and I’m glad that I was able to contribute a little something to this achievement.
