December 2019 – the genesis of what seemed like a containable virus named COVID-19 has now spread acrossthe globe at an unprecedented rate, affecting numerous cities and countries. Although Malaysia has not been spared, the country was prepared for the outbreak.

The Government of Malaysia, particularly The Ministry of Health was quick to implement preventive measures and constantly provided the nation with awareness on safety steps to curb the spread of COVID-19 right from when the number of reported cases were relatively low. Within three short months, Malaysia has gained a tighter grip over the spread of the virus.

The Government’s efforts received high praises globally and from the World Health Organization (WHO) on our preparedness and ability to address the COVID-19 outbreak. Malaysia exemplified excellence in investigating cases and practiced transparency in sharing the latest developments with WHO and the public. The confidence earned from our international peers led to Malaysia being chosen to take part in the search for a cure, a venture involving some of the top global experts from countries which share similar successes.

These success stories and global recognition are a direct result of the unwavering commitment and determination of the healthcare front liners. Solid private-public partnership played a vital role too with public hospitals and private hospitals working together to combat the virus spread.

Malaysia’s robust and firmly regulated healthcare system has also been a monumental factor in the success of battling COVID-19. The country remains safe, secure and steadfast in managing the situation and strive to remain so until the pandemic is eradicated from our shores.
