Cambodians who seek medical treatment abroad can look forward to a wide range of health services from Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) as the Malaysia-based hospital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Cambodian Muslim Development Foundation (CMDF).
Regarding the MoU signed at the CMDF office yesterday, Oknha Datuk Othsman Hassan, President of CMDF, said, “I believe that SMC’s comprehensive medical services and specialities, international collaboration and advanced technology are the catalyst of this MOU. The partnership with Sunway Medical Centre is a timely initiative in the post-COVID environment.”
Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim, Ambassador of Malaysia to Cambodia, was also present at the signing ceremony.
“One of the main objectives of the agreement is to provide hassle-free and top-quality treatment for Cambodians who seek treatment abroad,” Faith Tang, assistant director, international business development, SMC, told Khmer Times.
SMC said in a statement that it is the largest private hospital in Malaysia with 29 centres of excellence, 616 beds, more than 60 specialities and 300 specialists.
“With Malaysia being one of the top investors in Cambodia along with the growing Malaysian business community in Cambodia, the natural spinoff is that more Cambodians are beginning to look at Malaysia as a viable destination for their healthcare needs. The pandemic taught us to go back to the basics to focus on our health. Recently, we noticed a significant increase of Cambodians coming to us for medical check-ups as well as cancer treatment and general surgery,” Tang pointed out.
SMC is known for cancer treatment, blood diseases treatment, nuclear medicine, bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, paediatric cardiac surgery, orthopaedic, robotic-assisted surgeries, gastroenterology services, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiac and vascular as well as women and children specialities, the release said.
The hospital serves close to half a million patients annually with more than 40,000 international patient visits from 170 countries. It also clinched the ‘Stand-Out Jury Award for Best Hospital of the Year in Asia-Pacific 2021’ and the ‘Medical Tourism Hospital of the Year in Asia-Pacific’ for three consecutive years from 2018 – 2020.
It has a dedicated one-stop International Patient Centre (IPC) that takes care of international patients by proving assistance ranging from patient appointments, cost estimation, interpreter services, accommodation and transport logistics, etc.
CMDF is a non-governmental organisation in Phnom Penh that serves the Muslim community in Cambodia.
Officials said the MoU is a significant step forward to solidifying the partnership between Malaysia and Cambodia in seeking closer healthcare collaboration, following an earlier MOU signing between MHTC (Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council) and CMDF.
Dato’ Lau Beng Long, managing director of Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG), was quoted as saying in a release: “This strategic partnership is mutually beneficial for both parties as SMC provides a complete ecosystem of medical tourism that meets the holistic needs of the patients ranging from treatment, accommodation and leisure which all can be provided within Sunway City, Kuala Lumpur”.
SHG is one of the leading integrated private healthcare groups with a network of hospitals and health services in Malaysia. Following the rapid growth of SMC, the group opened its second tertiary hospital, Sunway Medical Centre Velocity in September 2019. Together, the two hospitals have a combined capacity of 850 beds and close to 400 consultant specialists, the release said.
