JOHOR BARU: Southkey Eye Specialist Centre Sdn Bhd, which runs The Eye Specialist Southkey, wants to position itself as one of the leading eye referral centres in the southern region.
Consultant ophthalmologist Dr Yip Kong Yake said the specialist centre offers various treatments including surgery for eye-related diseases.
Apart from Dr Yip, the centre has three other highly trained eye specialists and 10 non-medical staff.
“We see good prospects for eye-related treatments in the southern region, especially in the medical tourism,’’ he said during an interview after the grand opening of The Eye Specialist Southkey in Kota Southkey here.https://tpc.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html
He noted that due to its location in the Southkey commercial area, the centre had received good response from Johoreans since its soft opening in July.
He said the centre also attracted patients from all over the state and as well as those from Melaka.
“If not for the Covid-19 pandemic and the closing of the borders with Singapore and Indonesia, we could also expect patients from both countries coming for treatment at our centre,’’ he added.
Dr Yip said the number of Singaporeans getting treatment at private hospitals in Johor Baru in the past five years had increased as medical charges in the republic were becoming more expensive.
“For the Indonesians from the Riau archipelago, it is more convenient to take a ferry from the islands to the terminals here, which only takes 45 minutes to an hour,’’ he elaborated.
On eye care, the specialist advised people to take good care of their vision.
He said the early signs of eye problems included difficulty in adjusting to dark rooms, difficulty focusing on objects, sensitivity to light or glare, change in colour of the iris, red-rimmed, swollen eyelids, double vision, seeing light flashes, dark spots or ghost-like images.
“Others include seeing the distorted appearance of lines and edges, excess tearing or ‘watery eyes’, dry eyes with twitching or burning sensation, sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, sudden hazy or blurred vision and seeing halos or rainbows around the light.”
Dr Yip said those suffering from these symptoms should consult an eye specialist immediately as many eye diseases could be prevented or their progression could be slowed with early treatment and proper care.
“Our eyes are our window to this world, so taking good care of them is important to ensure that they serve us well throughout our lives,’’ he said.
